Dem Bois Inc. provides financial assistance to trans men of color who cannot afford the full cost of gender-affirming surgery. Having access to gender-affirming surgery reduces the overwhelming feelings of dysphoria, helps to alleviate the feelings of hopelessness, depression, and suicide. We want to support trans men of color on their journey to live authentic lives.
During our 2022 Gender Affirming Surgery Grant cycle, we received 386 grant applications from trans men of color who were seeking financial support for surgery.
1 awardee received $4,000 to pay their out-of-pocket cost.
1 awardee received $2,500 to pay their out-of-pocket cost.
1 awardee received $1,500 to pay their out-of-pocket cost.
$8,000 went towards helping 3 trans men of color with gender affirming surgery cost. All final awardees were able to receive their gender affirming surgery because of donations to Dem Bois that helped in paying for their cost. All 5 of the awardees in 2022 would not have been able to afford surgery without financial assistance.
44% of applicants in 2022 had NO health insurance
31% of applicants had health insurance but did NOT cover gender affirming surgery
That is 75% of the applicants without gender affirming surgery access.
While the cost of gender affirming surgery varies from person to person based on type of procedure, insurance versus no insurance, and if gender affirming surgery is covered at all. ‘Top surgery’ can cost upward of $10,000 and ‘bottom surgery’ can cost $24,000.

Dem Bois Inc. serves a population who are too often the furthest at the margins, trans men of color who have disproportionate access to quality healthcare and or the financial means to obtain gender affirming surgeries.
