Dem Bois Inc. provides financial assistance to trans men of color who cannot afford the full cost of gender-affirming surgery. Having access to gender-affirming surgery reduces the overwhelming feelings of dysphoria, helps to alleviate the feelings of hopelessness, depression, and suicide. We want to support trans men of color on their journey to live authentic lives.
According to The Report of the 2015 U.S. Transgender Survey, in 2015, as reported in the American Community Survey (ACS), among people of color, Black (20%), American Indian (18%), and Latino/a (17%) respondents were more likely to be uninsured. Among those who were insured and made request to their insurer for gender affirming surgery, more than half (55%) of respondents who sought transition related surgery coverage were denied. Transgender men (57%) were more likely to be denied surgery coverage than transgender women (54%) and non-binary people, including non-binary people with female on their original birth certificate (49%). Trans men of color experiences are even more acute.
