Having access to gender-affirming surgery reduces the overwhelming feelings of dysphoria, helps to alleviate the feelings of hopelessness, depression, and suicide. We want to support trans men of color on their journey to live authentic lives.
During our 2023 Gender Affirming Surgery Grant cycle, we received 365 grant applications from trans men of color who were seeking financial support for surgery.
1 awardee received $6,397 to pay their out-of-pocket cost.
1 awardee received $2,500 to pay their out-of-pocket cost.
1 awardee received $3,000 to pay their out-of-pocket cost.
$15,591 went towards helping 5 trans men of color with gender affirming surgery cost. All final awardees were able to receive gender affirming surgery because of donations that helped in paying for their cost. All 5 of the awardees in 2023 would not have been able to afford surgery without financial assistance.
While the cost of gender affirming surgery varies from person to person based on type of procedure, insurance versus no insurance, and if gender affirming surgery is covered at all. ‘Top surgery’ can cost upward of $10,000 and ‘bottom surgery’ can cost $24,000.

Dem Bois Inc. serves a population who are too often the furthest at the margins, trans men of color who have disproportionate access to quality healthcare and or the financial means to obtain gender affirming surgeries.
In 2023 we mailed out 116 personal hygiene care packages between August and December.
Dem Bois Podcast released its 40th episode on November 29, 2023. We paid guests a combined total of $1,500 in honorariums. Dem Bois Podcast believes in paying trans men of color for their time to come on the show, and share their stories to further our efforts to provide economic support to our community.
